How the decision was made to seek a new affiliation.
The Tamworth Nashville relationship has always been seen as a natural synergy. The mutual love of Country music and annual festivals meant that the two communities had already created a strong bond. It was just a matter of formalising it. A number of Community members sought out the Tamworth Sister City Committee and started discussions about Tamworth’s intentions or desire to formalise a Sister City relationship.
Tamworth’s Country Music Artists and Line dancing following had already seen numerous groups, musicians and private residents make the trip to Nashville for the Annual Fan Fare. In late 2010 and early 2011 the Tamworth music community made it known that they wanted Council to investigate a Sister City relationship with Nashville.
A local artist Carolynne Morris attended a Sister City Meeting and advised that she had been in contact with Nashville’s sister city board and reported that they too were interested in starting a relationship. The Tamworth Sister City Committee were hesitant to act on the proposal immediately due to budgetary constraints and an understanding of who (which community group) would be the leading force behind sustaining the relationship.
How the initial contact was made?
Initial contact to Tamworth Regional Council was made by Gary Jackson, Chairperson of Sister Cities of Nashville in August 2011 (although many private residents including Carolynne Morris had been in contact before this time). Gary’s email to Council:
"Hello folks; I am representing The Sister Cities of Nashville, as well the country music community, here in Nashville. Nashville is attempting to twin with Tamworth. My question to you is whether or not you would like to have a couple of country music acts perform at the 2012 Country Music Festival in Tamworth. Sincere thanks for your time. We do look forward to hearing from you."
